Mass Maritime sinks Baseball, 16-6

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass.—The MCLA Baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game weekend series to MASCAC rival Mass Maritime by a score of 16-6 this afternoon at Hendy Field. With the win the Buccaneers improve to 15-13 (5-6 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers fall to 8-19 (2-9 MASCAC).

Following a six-run 1st inning, a Brett Velzis solo homerun would give Maritime a 7-0 lead after two. MCLA would claw back into the game in the top of the 3rd after a Randy Adams fielder's choice, Noel Medina (2-for-4, RBI) base hit, Jayco Pena (1-for-4, 2 RBI) triple and Ty Mazzeo (1-for-4, RBI) double made it 7-5.

The Buccaneers would score the next five runs, four of which coming on solo homers, including back-to-backs by Chris Perito and Zach Sylvia in the bottom of the 3rd, one by Aidan Henderson in the 4th and another by Velzis in the 5th.

Austin Rachiele's (3-for-5, HR, RBI) solo homerun in the top of the 7th stopped the run to make it 12-6 but a 2-RBI single by Hunter Dean in the home-half extended the Buc's lead to 14-6 and two more in the 8th would make it 16-6.

Mass Maritime's Justin Brown (W, 3-1) pitched 8 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters. Nate Morse (L, 1-3) took the loss on the hill for MCLA pitching 3.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (4 earned) on nine hits while striking out four batters.

The series shifts to North Adams tomorrow for games two and three with the first pitch scheduled for 1pm.
