Fitchburg State outlasts Baseball 14-9 in MASCAC action

FITCHBURG, Mass.— Fitchburg State capitalized on five MCLA errors and used three big innings to hand MCLA a 14-9 MASCAC loss today at Riccards Field. With the win Fitchburg State improves to 16-15 (7-9 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers fall to 8-24 (2-14 MASCAC).

Austin Rachiele (4-for-4, HR, RBI) led the game off with his 10th homerun of the season, but the Falcons responded with five runs in the bottom of the 2nd including a two-run homer by Jacob Hurrell (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI) to make it 5-1.

The Trailblazers would edge their way back into the game as a Jayco Pena (2-for-5, 2 RBI) single which scored Randy Adams (2-for-4, 4 RBI) in the 5th along with a Josh Bologh (1-for-4, HR, RBI) solo shot, and Clarence Givhans sacrifice fly which brought home Ty Mazzeo in the 6th would cut the Fitchburg lead to 5-4.

In the bottom of the 6th a pair of MCLA errors, a two-RBI double from Matthew Smith (2-for-4, 3 RBI) and a two-run blast by Vincent Eramo (1-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) would extend the Fitchburg State lead to 10-4. An inning later the Falcons would push four more runs across the plate to take a commanding 14-4 lead.

An Adams sacrifice fly in the 8th and bases loaded three-RBI double in the 9th from which the senior first baseman would eventually score, would make it 14-9, but MCLA could get no closer.

Fitchburg State starting pitcher Orion Daily (W, 4-2) allowed 4 runs on eight hits, striking out three batters in 6.1 innings to earn the win. Nate Morse (L, 1-4) allowed 7 runs (one earned) and six hits, striking out a pair of Falcon batters in 5.2 innings but endured the loss for the Trailblazers.

The three-game series will continue and conclude tomorrow in North Adams with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2pm.
