Baseball falls 12-4 at Salem State

SALEM, Mass.—The Salem State baseball team took advantage of four MCLA errors scoring nine unearned runs on their way to a 12-4 MASCAC victory today in game one of a three-game weekend set. With the win the Vikings improve to 9-26 (6-13 MASCAC) while the Trailblazers fall to 10-26 (3-16 MASCAC).

MCLA's Rob Correia (2-for-3, RBI) singled to right field scoring Jayco Pena (3-for-5) to tie the game 1-1 in the top of the 2nd before Salem regained the lead in the bottom half of the 3rd on a TJ Beninati (1-for-3, RBI) single to make it 2-1. A pair of RBI hits from Brahiam Ortega (1-for-4, RBI) and Owen Duggan (1-for-4, 2 RBI) pushed the Viking lead to 5-1 after four.

Noel Medina (1-for-5, RBI) drove in Clarence Givhans (2-for-4) to cut the Salem lead to 5-2 in the top of the 5th but the hosts would add a run in the 6th and blow the game open scoring seven (six unearned) the 7th to make it 12-2.

A Randy Adams (1-for-4, RBI) single in the top of the 9th would drive in Givhans and Austin Rachiele (2-for-4) but it wouldn't be enough as the Vikings cruised to the 12-4 win.

Jake Boucher (3-for-4, RBI), Edward Field (1-for-4, 3 RBI), Aidan Lynch (3-for-4, RBI) helped lead the Salem State offense.

Salem starting pitcher Bobby Jellison (W, 2-6) allowed 2 runs (one earned) on eight hits, striking out three batters in five innings of work to earn the victory. MCLA's Nate Morse (L, 1-5) allowed 4 runs (one earned) on six hits in the loss.

The series will shift to Joe Wolfe Stadium in North Adams tomorrow at for a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon.
