Salem State Sinks Baseball, 15-2

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team played its final home game of the 2024 season this afternoon. They welcomed Salem State to come across the state for a MASCAC matchup. Due to playing conditions at the Zavatarro Athletic Complex, the game was moved to Bobby Coombs Field on the campus of Williams College. Salem State's Antonio Belgrove picked up six RBI and scored two runs as part of his 3-4 showing at the plate as the Vikings ran away with a 15-2 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game took an early turn in the first inning when Salem State scored three runs, setting the pace for the rest of the game. They did the damage on five hits, scoring the first run on an RBI single by Owen Duggan. Two batters later, Jake Boucher doubled into the left-center field gap to score another and was then followed by an RBI single by Antonio Belgrove.
  • In the middle innings, both teams' pitching staffs set the tone, with the Trailblazers scoring a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning, the only run until the Vikings put up a series of crooked numbers in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.
  • The MCLA run came around on an RBI single by Isaiah Tucker, who brought home Clayton Dutfield after he had reached on an error, advancing to second on the overthrow to first and moving to third on a passed ball.
  • The Salem State offense came alive in the sixth inning, putting up three runs on four hits. Belgrove's big hit was a two-run double to left. In the seventh inning, the Vikings plated two more runs on an RBI single back up the middle by Aidan Lynch.
  • Salem ended any doubts about their control of the game, scoring six more runs in the eighth inning. The largest blow was a bases-loaded triple to left field.
  • MCLA did add one more run in the bottom of the frame when Brady Hamel plated Rob Correia with a single into left center.
  • The Vikings' Nick Bamforth threw three and a third innings of scoreless relief to pick up his third win of the season and improve to 3-0. Joshua Bissaillon took the loss to fall to 1-7.

UP NEXT:

On Saturday, MCLA will be back in action when they travel to Salem State to wrap up the 2024 season with a MASCAC matchup with the Vikings at SSU Baseball Field. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
