FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – The MCLA Men's Hockey team is gelling as the season is coming to a close. As a first-year program, they have experienced some growing pains but are starting to turn things around in their penultimate game of the 2023-24 season. The Trailblazers are now on a three-game winning streak and are winners of four of their last five games after knocking off Framingham State 3-2 in overtime on the road this evening.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Thursday, February 15, 2024
  • Score: MCLA 3, Framingham State 2
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 7-16-1 (MASCAC 5-14-1) | Framingham State Rams 8-13-2 (MASCAC 8-9-2)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MCLA opened the scoring before most fans had a chance to warm up their seats at the Loring Arena. Off a draw from the right face-off circle, Charlie Adessa pushed the puck back to Sean Schifferl, who got off a wrister from the right slot. Framingham's goalie stopped the shot but allowed a rebound out to Gavin Glaubitz, who shoved it across for a 1-0 lead. The goal was Glaubitz's third of the season.
  • Framingham wouldn't let the lead go for too long, however, as they evened the score before the end of the period when Brent Scott (at 15:20, assisted by Jeremy McDonald and Scott Bugarin) put the hosts on the board.
  • The Rams then took the lead, scoring the only goal of the second period. This time, it was Devante Dixon (17:32, Robert Bernier and Jeremy McDonald) doing the scoring to make the lead 2-1 through two periods.
  • The Trailblazers leveled the game again when freshman defenseman Shane Green scored his first collegiate goal with just under six minutes off the third-period clock. After a matching set of roughing penalties set the teams up for two minutes of four-on-four, MCLA won the faceoff from just outside their offensive zone, and Cade Herrera fought off a pair of Ram defenders to get a shot on net. Framingham's goalie again made the stop but couldn't prevent a rebound. A scrum formed in front of the net, with Herrera and Easton Moore each getting a stab at a rebound before Green was able to light the lamp and tie the game at two.
  • Despite the Rams outshooting the Trailblazers 18-11 in the third period, the teams would need bonus hockey to determine a winner.
  • MCLA only needed two minutes and forty seconds of three-on-three hockey to decide it was time to go home. After Mathew Gover turned away a pair of scoring opportunities for Framingham State, a Rams player was unable to keep the puck in the offensive zone, and Alex Ferris was on the spot to make them pay for the mistake. As the puck skipped over the Framingham stick, Ferris quickly outskated two of the host skaters and raced to rip off a wrister from the left slot for the game-winner.
  • Gover stopped 48 of the 50 shots he faced, including three in the overtime period, and improved his record to 6-13-1. The Rams' Trevor Stenberg was saddled with the tough-luck loss, falling to 7-9-2 after stopping 24 of 27 shots on net.
