Men's Ice Hockey Wrap Up First Season Back with Loss to Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. – The MCLA Men's Ice Hockey team wrapped up their first season since reinstatement this evening on the road against MASCAC foe Worcester State at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center. The Trailblazers entered the game mathematically eliminated from the MASCAC playoff picture, but they still had the opportunity to play spoiler for the Lancers, who needed a win for there to be any scenario for them to qualify.

THE BASICS:

  • Score: MCLA 1, Worcester State 6
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 7-17-1 (MASCAC 5-15-1) | Worcester State Lancers 8-17-0 (MASCAC 7-14-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Worcester State started the scoring by putting up two goals in the first period. Michael Schaaf (at 9:29, assisted by Brendan Ronan) scored the first on the power play. The second was unassisted and scored by Brian Clougherty (13:08, unassisted).
  • The Lancers' lead was stretched to three goals when Anders Grongstad (3:35, unassisted) around three and a half minutes into the frame.
  • MCLA scored what would turn out to be their lone goal in the second period. It was credited to Christopher Gallagher (11:05, unassisted).
  • Worcester returned their lead to three goals only seconds short of the second intermission, adding another power-play goal by Shane Prifrel (19:24, Ronan and Martin Dlugolinsky).
  • Two more goals were added by the Lancers in the final period. The first was by Ronan (10:20, Maxwell Tucker and Dlugolinsky), while the second went to Matt Lombardi (15:52, Evan Armit).
  • The Trailblazers' Mathew Gover finished the game with 37 saves but still saw his record fall to 6-14-1, while Jacob Kubik moved to 6-11-1 after stopping 23 of 24 shots on goal.
