MCLA Men fall to Salem 5-1

North Adams, MA- The MCLA Men's soccer team fell to MASCAC rival Salem State this afternoon at Shewcraft Field by a score of 5-1.  Viking senior Andrew Angus notched a pair of goals, while fellow senior Jared Barbosa collected four assists.  All of the scoring took place in the second half.  With the win, Salem improves to 5-3 (3-0 MASCAC) while MCLA falls to 4-3-1 (0-2-1 MASCAC) overall.

The first half saw both teams with quality scoring chances.   Both keepers, MCLA's Evan Coe (Hopewell Jct, NY) and Salem's Scott Hall, kept the opponent at bay as it was scoreless at the half.  Salem exploded out of the intermission as Angus headed home a direct kick from Barbosa just a minute into the half.  Three minutes later, the two would connect again as Angus took a thru pass beating Coe to the far post.  The surge continued when Salem sophomore Raphael Santos took a cross from Barbosa and found the net. 

MCLA responded to the onslaught with a Casey Baker (Pittsfield, MA) goal in the 52nd minute of play, however the Vikings put the game away when Barbosa collected his fourth assist of the afternoon, this time finding Carlos De Oliveria for the momentum stopping goal at the 58 minute mark.  David Miller would round out the scoring, beating Coe in the 65th minute.

Hall collected 11 saves in earning the victory for Salem.  Coe took the loss stopping 6 shots on the afternoon.  MCLA is back in action Wednesday night when the travel to Springfield college.
