MCLA falls to Husson in final game of CIAO Classic

Union's Sebastiaan Jansen and Husson's Brian Potter claim individual honors

North Adams, MA- The Union College Men's Soccer team captured the 2011 CIAO Classic title with an unblemished mark of 2-0.  The Dutchmen outscored their opponents 20-1 over the two game span.  Husson University was named tournament runner up following a 1-0 win over host MCLA.  Union's Sebastiaan Jansen was named the offensive MVP, while Husson's Brian Potter earned defensive honors.

MCLA vs. Husson-

Husson used a first half goal by Zach Emeigh in the 21st minute to hold off MCLA 1-0 in the final game of the tournament.  With the win, the Eagles moved to 2-2-1, while MCLA drops to 2-2 overall.

Emeigh's goal was the work of efficient passing as Ahmed Abdirahman played the ball upfield to Philip Frost who crossed over to Emeigh for the eventual game winner.  Both teams had several scoring chances, however physical defensive play on both sides kept scoring opportunities down.

The Trailblazers had a few opportunities late including good looks from Tedd Cecchitelli and Liroy Ozinci.  Both were denied by the stellar play of Potter.  He notched 13 saves to earn the shutout.  His counterpart also played well, MCLA keeper Dillon Wager.  Wager registered 7 saves on the afternoon.

The physical play resulted in seven combined yellow cards and 27 fouls.  MCLA actually outshot Husson 23-16 on the afternoon.

Union vs. Medgar Evers

North Adams, MA- Union College used an explosive spurt over the final 25 minutes of the opening half en route to a convincing 14-0 win over Medgar Evers. Mark Zeyak netted a first half hat trick to lead Union, while CIAO MVP Sebastiaan Jansen collected his second straight hat trick.  With the win, Union moved to 5-0 and captured the CIAO Classic title.  Medgar Evers drops to 0-4 on the season.

Jansen notched his fourth goal of the tournament to kick off the first half barrage in 20th minute.  Six minutes later, Chris Choquette took a Jansen throw and pounded it past Medgar Evers keeper Christopher Welsh.  Zeyak then scored the first of his three goals in the period at the 31:09 mark.  Sahr Nyuma blasted home a shot from close range, while Zeyak added two more in the closing minutes of the half.

The Dutchmen wasted little time in adding to their lead when Jansen tallied twice in the opening minutes of the second period.  Eight different Union players notched markers on the afternoon.

Union outshot Medgar Evers 38-7 on the afternoon.
