Men's Soccer blanked by Union in CIAO Classic opener

North Adams, MA- Visiting Union (NY) College received a hat trick from Carl Faber as the Dutchmen downed MCLA 6-0 this afternoon at Shewcraft Field in the opening game of the 2013 CIAO Classic.  With the win, Union improves to 3-0 while the Trailblazers fall to 2-1.

After a scoreless opening twenty minutes, Faber broke the ice.  He tallied a goal in the 22nd minute giving Union the early lead.  The Dutchmen would begin to control much of the half and finally broke through again in the 40th minute.

Following a take down in the box by MCLA keeper Matt Robinson, Union's Kevin Janson converted the ensuing penalty kick to give them a 2-0 halftime edge.  Union left little doubt, tallying three more times in the opening eight minutes to break it open.

James Skelton converted a Janson cross to make it 3-0 before Faber connected after a nifty pass from Dean Constant just six minutes later.  The latter duo would hook up again just 45 seconds later giving Faber the hat trick and Union an insurmountable 5-0 lead.  Skelton would add his second goal of the day off a direct kick in the 64th minute.

MCLA was limited in regards to scoring opportunities, especially in the second half.  Union's Ryan Carter stopped the only two shots he saw in combining for the shutout victory.

Union outshot MCLA 19-6 on the afternoon, 8-2 in the second half alone.

Both squads will be back in action tomorrow when Union will battle Castleton State at Noon.  MCLA will take on Norwich at 2pm tomorrow looking to get back on track.
