Men's Tennis qualifies for NAC playoffs with 7-2 win over Green Mountain

Poultney, VT- For the first time since joining the NAC, the MCLA Men's tennis program has secured a playoff berth by defeating the Green Mountain Eagles 7-2 this afternoon.  The win avenged an earlier loss to GMC as MCLA improves to 3-2 in the NAC and 3-5 overall.  The Eagles fall to 4-6 overall and are 0-4 in the conference.

MCLA started fast in the rematch as they took all three doubles matches to take a commanding lead.  Michael Rooney and Rich LaRocque cruised in the second slot 8-2 as did Jeff Mason and Jared Freeman.  The key doubles result was when the duo of Aaron Goldsmith and Rob Wabshinak held off Connor Braden and Truman Cressey 9-8 (7-4 tiebreak) to give the Trailblazers a 3-0 cushion heading into singles.

Braden and Cressey would get a bit of revenge on Goldsmith and Wabshinak as they took the first two singles matches in straight sets.  MCLA would have the answer though as they would claim the final four singles matches to secure the win.

Rooney won 6-2, 6-1 in the third slot while LaRocque also cruised 6-1, 6-3.

Mason and Freeman also earned their second points of the day winning 6-0, 7-5 and 6-1, 6-3 respectively.

The Trailblazers have clinched a playoff berth, but their seeding is still to be determined as they have a key match with Castleton scheduled at home on Sunday afternoon.  The NAC tournament will be held on Saturday April 30th at the regular season champion's home court.
