Sicinski and Romano Big in Trailblazers Sweep of Bears

Sicinski and Romano Big in Trailblazers Sweep of Bears

MCLA softball earned a key sweep today of Bridgewater State and now controls their own destiny as they try to capture the MASCAC regular season title.

MCLA (11-15, 8-2) jumped out early off Bears starter Kelly McCarthy in game one. McCarthy walked Michaela DiNicola to lead off the game, and reached third with one out when Rachel Quackenbush reached on a fielder's choice. Dinicola and Quackenbush both came around on a two-out double from Jennifer Sicinski for a 2-0 lead.

The score would remain 2-0 until the fifth when Amanda Meczywor led off with a single and promptly stole second. Meczywor would make it 3-0 when she scored on an Alexandra Romano single to center.

Quackenbush would make it stand up for the Trailblazers as she would go the distance, allowing two unearned runs and striking out six. McCarthy took the loss for the Bears also going the distance; surrendering six hits and four earned runs.

Game two was similar to game one as MCLA would build a 3-0 lead after five innings. In the third Romano doubled with one out and Quackenbush was hit by a pitch. It was Sicinski who again stepped up with a single to right-center, scoring two.

Meczywor breexed through the first five, but in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears got the first two on base. Courtney Leddy and McCarthy had back to back singles and MCLA went to Quackenbush.  The Bears scratched out a run, but the damage was minimized.

The Trailblazers got the run back in the top of the seventh when Romano doubled in Dinicola from first with one out. Bridgewater (17-11, 7-5) wouldn't threaten in the seventh and the Trailblazers had earned their seventh straight conference victory.

Meczywor got the win and went to 4-8 on the year, Quackenbush picked up her second save. Kathleen Bailey took the loss for Bridgewater.

MCLA is scheduled to host Salem State tomorrow at 2:00 PM.
