Softball can’t keep pace in nonconference doubleheader against Union

NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—The MCLA Softball team lost a pair of nonconference games this afternoon to Union College (NY). Union pulled away late in game one taking it by a score of 8-3 and shut out the hosts 12-0 in the nightcap. With the results Union improves to 7-9 while MCLA falls to 4-16.

Game One         Union 8               MCLA 3

A Lidia Flores (3-for4, 2 RBI) two-out base hit would drive in Madison Teta (3-for-4, HR, RBI) from second to give MCLA a 1-0 lead after one inning of play, but Union would answer with one of their own in the top of the second.

After the Dutchwomen went ahead by one in the top of the 5th, a solo shot over the right field fence by Teta would tie the game, 2-2.

Union would go ahead by one again in the top of the 6th when a single down the line by Hanna Mitchell scored Melody Kappel to make it 3-2. The visitors would erupt for five runs in the top of the 7th to make it 8-2. The Trailblazers would get one back in the bottom half but would ultimately fall, 8-3.

Union reliever Autumn Duff earned the win improving to 2-3. Lidia Flores took the loss for the Trailblazers and falls to 3-7 on the season.

Game Two         Union 12            MCLA 0

The Union bats stayed hot at the start of game two as they posted three runs in the top of the 1st to take the early lead. The Dutchwomen would add a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to make it 6-0 before scoring six more in the top of the 7th to remove all doubt of the outcome.

MCLA put runners on base in every inning, but the Trailblazers couldn't break through with the key hit or avoid running into four costly double plays.

Seven Dutchwomen had muti-hit games including Karson Saunders (4-for-5, 3 RBI), Ellie Wintringer (3-for-4, 4 RBI), Tatum Perkins (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Tara Hartnett (2-for-4, 2 RBI).

Union's Melody Kappel (W, 3-2) earned the complete game shutout allowing 8 hits and striking out four batters. MCLA's Sarah Williams (L, 3-5) allowed 6 runs on fifteen hits in 6.1 innings in the setback.

Union will next travel to Ithaca on Saturday while MCLA will be back in action on Thursday when they host Sage in a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
