Trailblazers drop second straight MASCAC game at Salem 78-60

Salem, Mass -- Salem State used a blistering 41-9 run spanning two halves to defeat visiting MCLA 78-60 Tuesday evening at Twohig Gymnasium in Massachusetts Small College Athletic Conference action.

The Lady Vikings (7-4, 1-0 MASCAC) were led by senior forward Danielle Jenkins (Marlborough, MA) who had a game-high 20 points. Sophomore guard Amy Barry (Manchester, NH) added 13, including 3-4 from three-point land. The Trailblazers (9-3, 0-2 MASCAC) were paced by senior forward Laura Silverman (Ballston Lake, NY) who had 12 points and junior guard Molly Broda (Southampton, MA) who finished with 11.

The game started out even, with the lead changing hands five times in the first 15 minutes. MCLA took charge with a quick 9-0 run late in the half, thanks to seven straight points from Broda, including a four-point play and another three-pointer. The outburst gave the Trailblazers a 24-21 advantage, but it would be short-lived, and the Vikings would respond with a vengeance.

A three-pointer by Barry tied the game at 24 with four minutes left in the period, but MCLA reclaimed the lead on a free throw by Silverman. The Vikings would then score 14 of the final 16 points in the half to take a commanding 38-27 lead into the locker room. Jenkins was the catalyst, with three easy hoops in the paint and a pair of free throws to spark the run. She finished the half with 12 points, including eight in the final three minutes.

Salem State picked up where it left off after the break, outscoring the visitors 24-6 in the first eight minutes. Madeleleine Park (Blue Hill, ME) and Erica Batchelder (Stoughton, MA) bookended three-pointers around a trio of hoops by Jenkins to increase the lead to 21, 52-31, and after Jade Brickett (Westhampton, MA) scored for MCLA, the Vikings rattled off another 10-0 run to seize a commanding 62-33 lead.

The Vikings shot a solid 48% (31-65) from the field, including an impressive 10-22 from beyond the arc. SSC dominated the glass as well, outrebounding MCLA 45-36.
