WNE pulls away from MCLA Women 77-61

North Adams, MA- The visiting Western New England Golden Bears received 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists from Chelsea Vujs as the sophomore led the Bears past the MCLA Trailblazers 77-61 this evening in the Amsler Campus Center Gym.  WNE evens its mark at 2-2 while the Trailblazers fall to 1-2 on the season.

Both sides played well in the opening frame which saw seven ties and neither team lead by more than six.  WNE scored the final three points of the half to grab a 35-32 lead at halftime.

Following halftime though, the Golden Bears began to assert themselves, particularly on the glass.  Through six and half minutes of play in the closing half, WNE held a slim 48-45 lead after MCLA's Ashley Clawson knocked down one of the Trailblazers' eight three pointers in the game.  From there the visitors responded.

WNE went on a 7-0 run capped off by a three point play from Alicia Lewis to grab a 55-45 lead.  The Bears would extend out to a 65-52 lead following a Vujs layup with just over five minutes remaining.  MCLA would trim the margin to nine following a pair of Danielle Scolpino free throws, however, Nicole Daly would drill a three pointer on the next possession to send WNE on its way.

WNE outrebounded MCLA 43-24 on the night, including a 23-7 edge after intermission.  Vujs was 7-11 from the floor to lead the Golden Bears.  Daly would finish right behind her with 17 points, which included a perfect 4-4 from downtown.  Lewis chipped in off the bench with 10 points.  Katie Eckert did a bit of everything filling the stat sheet with 9 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.  Shaylyn Sicard added a game high 6 assists for WNE.

MCLA was led by Scolpino who finished with a game high 22 points on 6-12 shooting.  Clawson was the only other Trailblazer in double figures chipping in with 14 points.  Clawson and Michaela Siver each collected five assists in defeat.

WNE will battle fellow MASCAC foe Framingham State on Saturday, while the Trailblazers will travel to Daniel Webster.
