WILKES, Penn. – Carlen Bertrand scored the first goal in the MCLA Women's Ice Hockey program's history. Still, it wasn't enough as the Wilkes University Colonels swept the season-opening series at the Toyota SportsPlex, winning the second game 6-1.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, October 28, 2023
  • Score: MCLA 1, Wilkes University 6
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 0-2-0 (ECHA 0-0-0) | Wilkes Colonels 2-0-0 (ECHC 0-0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game was close through the first two periods. Bertrand's goal came with just under two minutes remaining in the second period and cut the Wilkes lead in half at 2-1. Brigh Cote and Alexandrea Bednar were credited with the assists on the goal.
  • For the second straight night, it was the Colonels who scored the game's first point a bit more than halfway through the opening frame. Jordan Ferry did the deed with assists going to Abigail Barcless and Lily Zingaro.
  • Barcless was also involved in the Colonels' second goal during the second period, being credited alongside Rissa Brazeau on a goal scored by Milica Velcek just before the 14-minute mark.
  • Barcless then opened the scoring less than two minutes into the third period, with helpers going to Bella Kaczorowski and Rachel Morey.
  • Kaczorowski pushed the Colonels' lead to 4-1 as the clock wound under 15 minutes to play, putting the puck in the back of the net with the aid of Morey and Anneke Bouma.
  • Ferry was the first player to score an unassisted goal, doing so with just under five minutes to play for her second goal of the day.
  • Ferry then played a part in scoring the game's first power-play goal, recording an assist in the closing seconds when Brazeau scored with the man advantage with only 11 seconds remaining.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Katie O'Brien recorded 52 saves in the losing effort, stopping 16, 18, and 18 shots across the three periods.
  • O'Brien wasn't the only Trailblazers stopping shots, as MCLA had a 16-1 advantage in blocked shots to help their netminder. Katie Pica did so four times, while Bednar and Summer Bissaillion had three and two, respectively. Seven others had one each.
  • The Trailblazers did show signs of improvement in the faceoff circle in their second game, winning 22 of their 60 faceoffs.
