NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The MCLA Women's Ice Hockey wrapped up a weekend series with Hilbert College at the Veterans Memorial Hockey Rink with a 4-3 victory. Four different Trailblazers all recorded their first collegiate goals in the win.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, November 4, 2023
  • Score: Hilbert College 3, MCLA 4
  • Records: Hilbert College Hawks 1-3-0 (Conference N/A) | MCLA Trailblazers 2-2-0 (ECHA 0-0-0)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • MCLA was the first team on the scoreboard with a power-play goal just before the midway point of the first period. Carlen Bertrand sent a shot into the left of the net that Alexandrea Bednar picked up below the goal line, circled around the net, and sent a pass off of a defender's skate directly to Summer Bissaillion, who lit the lamp with her first goal of the season.
  • Bednar gave the Trailblazers a 2-0 lead about five minutes later when she forced a turnover in the neutral zone and pushed the puck ahead, and then outskated five Hilbert defenders into the zone, and went top-shelf on the goalie for her first goal of the year.
  • The MCLA lead would remain two goals until just under the six-minute mark of the second period when the Hawks' Anna Faulkner scored her third goal of the season with assists going to Kaitlin Cowie and Megan Moceri. The Hawks would then pull even with just over 10 minutes remaining in the period when Sophia Perry scored with an assist from Caitlin Conrad and Abby McNeil.
  • Another power play opportunity late in the second period allowed the Trailblazers to regain the lead. Following an interference call on Faulkner, Katie Pica won the faceoff from the left faceoff circle. She moved the puck to Belle Wurmser along the boards, who cleared it back to Natasha Lozowchuk, for a pass to Mallory Stuart, whose one-timer from between the circles put the hosts back in front. The goal was Stuart's first of the year.
  • Hilbert answered back again in the third period with a power play goal of their own by Jacqueline Alaburda, with assists credited to Faulkner and Cowie.
  • Wurmser would score what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with 11:31 remaining on the clock with another power-play goal. Stuart again attempted another one-timer from the left point that would have gone wide but had her shot deflect off of a defender's skate towards the net. The goalie stopped the puck but allowed a rebound to Wurmser, who had crashed down following the shot and was in perfect position to clean up the rebound for her first goal this year.
  • The Trailblazers' Katie O'Brien made 22 saves as she improved her record on the year to 1-1-0. Jewely Monford was saddled with the loss and fell to 0-2-0 despite making 32 saves.
