NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The MCLA Women's Hockey opened their home-and-home series with ECHA foe Anna Maria College this evening at the Peter W. Foote Vietnam Veterans Memorial Rink. Juliette Barney came within two saves of the school record she already holds, with 67 saves. Anna Maria's Tessa Henry scored the lone goal for the AMCATs, while Katie Pica scored the game-tying goal for the Trailblazers in the 1-1 tie.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Friday, February 2, 2024
  • Score: Anna Maria 1, MCLA 1
  • Records: Anna Maria AMCATs 7-9-4 (ECHA4-1-2) | MCLA Trailblazers 4-14-1 (ECHA 0-1-0)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • After a scoreless first period, Anna Maria was the first on the board as the second period approached its midpoint. Jordyn Bleaney circled around the back of the net and found Tessa Henry crashing through the left faceoff circle for a wrister that hit off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
  • MCLA found the equalizing goal in the third period, just over four and a half minutes in the frame. After winning the faceoff in the left circle, Katie Pica sent the puck back to Becky Ade, who sent it around the boards. It was touched up by an AMCAT player, but Pica kept it in her offensive zone, skated back around the right-hand side of the goal, and passed it to Abby Pomajba along the end line. Pomajba passed it back the way it came to Pica standing beside the net, where she jammed it in past the goalie' blocker side.
  • The key sequence for the Trailblazers came just after the midpoint of the third period. After a faceoff in the MCLA defensive end that began with 9:47 on the clock, the puck would not be stopped again until there was only 4:32 remaining in regulation. Both teams would have scoring chances, but the decisive time was a solid two-minute stretch during that run in which Anna Maria was able to keep the puck in the zone and prevent the hosts from executing a line change. For that 120-second stretch from 7:30 to 5:30, AMC managed to fire off 13 shots, eight of which were on goal and were stopped by Juliette Barney. It wasn't until Mallory Stuart managed to knock the puck off an Anna Maria skater's stick and send it down the ice and for Milena Monell to out-skate the AMCAT team into the zone to hold off an icing call, allowing Paige Pouliot, Belle Wurmser, Graci McGee, and Stuart to get to the bench and reinforcements take their place.
  • Barney finished the game with 67 saves on 68 shots for the Trailblazers and now sports a season record of 3-7-1. Anna Maria's Megan Tegethoff wrapped up her night with 18 stops on 19 opportunities, with her record going to 1-1-1.
