Late goal does in Women’s Lacrosse at Wells

AURORA, New York— Clara Lima's late goal pushed Wells College past MCLA 15-14 this afternoon as the Express earned their first win of the season in nonconference  Women's Lacrosse action. With the win Wells improves to 1-3 while MCLA falls to 2-4.

Wells would strike first with two goals a little over two-and-a-half minutes into the contest that were scored just five seconds apart, but MCLA's Summer Nichols (6 goals) and Julia Graham (4 goals, 2 assists) would answer to draw the Trailblazers even less than three minutes later. Down 3-2 late in the quarter, Nina Reyes (4 goals, assist) would tie the game again for MCLA but a Clara Lima (7 goals, 3 assists) goal with just over a minute left gave Wells a 4-3 lead after one.

The second quarter was tightly contested as well with Skyelyn Haynes (goal, assist), Graham and Reyes scoring for the Trailblazers while Lima added two more before Lidia Thomas (6 goals, 3 assists) with just 26 seconds left made it 6-6 headed into halftime.

MCLA would lead 8-6 and 11-8 with Nichols scoring four of the five third quarter goals for the Trailblazers. Wells would answer with a 3-goal run wrapped around the break to catch MCLA at 11-11 early in the fourth quarter.

The Trailblazers again would lead twice by two goals at 13-11 at the ten-minute mark and 14-12 with just under seven minutes to play in the final quarter. Once again however, the Express would go on a 3-goal run, this time to take a 15-14 lead with 4:07 left to play.

Nichols would score her 6th goal of the game to make it 15-15 with 3:34 remaining but it would be Clara Lima's game-high 7th tally with 2:26 left that would prove to be the game-winner for the hosts.

Express goalie Kayla Growth (W, 1-0) made 4 saves on nineteen shots while Trailblazer goaltender Lori Lester (L, 2-4) stopped 11 of 27 shots.

Both teams will return to conference play on Saturday as Wells travels to Mt. Aloysius and MCLA visits Framingham State for a 7pm start.
