Women's Soccer earns sixth seed in MASCAC tourney, will head to Bridgewater Tuesday

WESTFIELD, Mass. – For the second straight season, the Worcester State Lancers have earned the top seed in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament which launches on Tuesday, November 3 with the quarterfinal match-ups.

Beginning on Tuesday, the first quarterfinal will feature fourth-seeded Framingham State hosting fifth-seeded Salem State at 6 pm while third-seeded Bridgewater State entertains sixth-seeded MCLA at 7 pm. Second-seeded Westfield State will host the winner of Bridgewater State/MCLA at 4 pm on Friday, November 6. Worcester State will play the winner of Framingham State/Salem State at 7 pm.

The winners of the semifinal contests will hit the field on Sunday at the highest remaining seed to decide the MASCAC tournament champion and automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament.

Earning the top seed, first round bye and MASCAC regular season championship, Worcester State finished 6-0-1 in conference play. The Lancers were led by reigning MASCAC Player of the Year Alicia Macomber who finished the regular season first in the conference in goals (10), assists (5) and points (25). Teammate Jillian Witkowski was strong in goal with the second-best save percentage (.901) and goals against average (0.65) in the MASCAC.

Grabbing the other first round bye and second seed is Westfield State who finished with a 5-1-1 conference record. Goalie Anne Stack was solid between the pipes for the Owls, leading the MASCAC in save percentage (.902) and goals against average (0.38). Kate Matroni led the team in points with 13 on five goals and three assists.

Bridgewater State lands in the third seed after closing out the league schedule with a 5-2 record. The Bears' Marissa Yowell ended the regular season with the most points at 12 on five goals and two assists. Goalie Lauren DeSousa tallied 90 saves, save percentage of .826 and a 1.20 goals against average.

Sitting in the fourth spot is Framingham State. The Rams ended the conference season with a 4-1-2 record. Marissa Miele netted the second most points in the league (19) and third most goals (8). During her freshman campaign, Megan White was second to Miele on the team with 14 points on five goals and four assists.

Rounding out the tournament slots is Salem State and MCLA in the fifth and sixth seed, respectively.  The Vikings tallied three wins during conference competition. Ashley Lebouef led the way for the squad with seven goals and an assist for 15 points. The Trailblazers finished with one win in conference play while Jackie Dwyer and Natalie Caney both had six points to close out the regular season.

During the 2014 MASCAC Tournament, top seed Worcester State outlasted second seed Westfield State for the 1-0 win to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
