Volleyball Splits on Second Day of Keuka Tournament

KEUKA PARK, New York- The MCLA Volleyball team split a pair of matches today at Keuka College being swept by the hosts this morning and bouncing back to defeat SUNY Canton in four sets. With the results the Trailblazers now sit at 2-1 on the young season.

An early kill by Chloie Garber to make it 2-1 marked the last lead MCLA would have in the opening set as Keuka enjoyed several 5-point leads before ultimately taking the first set 25-17.

The next two sets looked like they were headed in a different direction. Down 24-20 in the second, the Wolves fought off four set points as part of a six-point run, the last four of which kills by Dayna Edholm, to steal the set 26-24 and take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Edholm did in the visitors at the end of the third as well. This time trailing 23-21, the senior outside hitter produced four straight kills to snatch the set once again from MCLA, this time by a score of 25-23 to take the match.

Endholm led all players with 14 kills and also chipped in 13 digs. Teammates Ava Hubbard (10 kills) and Emma Sipos (19 digs) had strong performances as well.

Garber led the Trailblazers with 11 kills while Julia Conturso with 15 digs and Elizabeth Brown with 12 digs were solid in the losing effort.

MCLA 3               SUNY Canton 1

After splitting the first two sets 25-20 and 16-25 in their second match of the day, the Trailblazers finished strong running away with the final two sets 25-16 and 25-12 to defeat SUNY Canton 3-1.

Up 5-4 in the third, a Julia Conturso ace kicked off a 10-0 run by MCLA which was capped off by a Makenna Carter kill to make it 15-4 giving the Trailblazers all the breathing run they would need cruising to 25-16 set win.

MCLA would end the match with an even more impressive 13-1 run in the fourth that included 4 Anais Badio kills, as the Trailblazers cruised to a 25-12 set win and 3-1 match victory.

Chloie Garber led all players with 10 kills while Conturso finished with a game-high 23 digs. Badio finished the match with 9 kills and four digs. Elizabeth Brown had 8 kills and nine digs while Ezmeralda Albright chipped in 11 digs.

MCLA next travels to Mount Holyoke on Thursday for a 7pm match with the Lyons.
