Volleyball Takes Down Castleton in Four Sets

CASTLETON, Vermont— The MCLA Volleyball team took a four-set, nonconference decision from host Vermont State University Castleton tonight besting the Spartans 25-14, 25-20, 20-25, 25-18. With the win MCLA improves to 4-2 while Castleton drops to 3-2.

The Trailblazers never trailed in the first set jumping out to an 8-1 lead following an Ezmeralda Albright service ace. The Spartans cut the deficit to five on several occasions, but MCLA pulled away to win the set 25-14.

The second would see Castleton take an early 8-3 lead, but a 9-0 run capped off by an Elizabeth Brown ace made it 9-8 and the Trailblazers never looked back taking the set 25-20 and along with it, a commanding 2-0 match lead.

Tied 20-20 in the third, the Spartans went on a 5-0 run to avoid the sweep, but MCLA would right the ship in the fourth leading by as many as eight points and eventually taking the set 25-18 and the match 3-1.

Anais Badio led all players with 14 kills, as did Elizabeth Brown with 15 digs. Chloie Garber turned in a double-double with 11 kills and thirteen digs. Audrey Melson (13 kills), Julia Conturso (12 digs) and Beth Harris (11 digs) also had strong performances.

The Trailblazers finished with a .233 hitting percentage in the match.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with Castleton visiting Sage for a tri-match with SUNY Oneonta and MCLA hosting SUNY poly at 1pm.
