Trailblazers fall to WNEC at 16-6

The Western New England College baseball team defeated Massachusetts College 16-6 in its home opener Thursday afternoon (March 25) at Trelease Park.

Western New England College banged out 14 hits against four MCLA eft-handed pitchers, including seven for extra bases.

Senior first baseman Joe Griglun (Southington, CT) belted a two-run homer in the first inning by while junior third baseman Tony Trubia (Tolland, CT) walloped a three-run blast in the fourth. Griglun also walked three times and scored three runs. Trubia finished with four runs-batted-in and scored twice.

Junior catcher Jason Leclerc (Chicopee, MA) had a pair of doubles, three runs, and two RBI.

Western New England College used six pitchers by arrangement with sophomore Rob Neagle (Branford, CT) allowing only a hit with a strikeout for his second win in three decisions.

Junior designated hitter Osiris Mendez (Queens, NY) homered, singled and scored twice for the Trailblazers. Junior center fielder Eddie George (Falls Church, VA) added a single, RBI double, and sacrifice. Mike Meaney (North Adams, MA) doubled and scored a run.

Daniel Gaines (Holyoke, MA) took the loss for the Trailblazers. Andrew Kelley (Dalton, MA)  tossed three scorless innings of relief.

Forty-two players saw action, including 23 for the Golden Bears.

Western New England College is now 9-3 while MCLA drops to 1-6. 

MCLA is scheduled to play two Saturday versus Elms College starting at 1:00pm.
