MCLA bats silent as Worcester sweeps the Trailblazers in baseball

Worcester, MA- The MCLA baseball team could only muster up seven hits on the afternoon as the host Worcester State Lancers cruised to a 5-0 and 7-1 MASCAC doubleheader sweep of the Trailblazers at Auburn High School.  The Lancers improve to 6-8 overall and 2-0 in league play, while MCLA drops to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in MASCAC play.

The opener saw the Lancers grab a 1-0 lead after two innings and then created separation with a pair of runs in the third to seize control.  An error and a misjudged fly ball led to the first run while a fielders choice brought in the second run of the frame.  Worcester added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to round out the scoring.

From there, the story was Lancer starter Ben Libuda.  The junior left hander went the distance to earn the shutout striking out six Trailblazers and allowing just two hits.  Robert Jutras absorbed the loss for MCLA going the first four innings.

In the nightcap, the Lancers wasted little time in getting to Trailblazer starter Mike Mancivalano.  They scored five runs in the first as they sent ten hitters to the plate.  They parlayed three hits, three walks, an error, and a hit batter into the five run frame.  Worcester would chase Mancivalano in the second getting another run as he gave way to Matt Clark out of the Trailblazer bullpen.

Clark would be effective for his 3+ innings of work, however the hole was too big for MCLA as they could only must a run in the seventh inning on a Mike Sullivan sacrifice fly.

MCLA was held to five hits from Lancer starter Kris Doyle.  He worked around five walks to strike out seven Trailblazers in earning the win.

Worcester outhit MCLA 8-5 in the nightcap.

MCLA is back in action on Tuesday when they challenge Southern Vermont at 3:30.
