TROY, N.Y. – The MCLA Baseball team took to the road this afternoon for a non-conference matchup with the Engineers of RPI. It was a Johnny-Whole-Staff-Day on the mound for the Trailblazers, who utilized six pitchers to get through the rain-shortened six-inning game. Ty Mazzeo and William Walsh each drove in a run in the second inning, but the visitors proved unable to solve Engineer's starting pitcher, Mike Nelson, in any other inning before the umpires called the game with the hosts leading 5-2 in the middle of the sixth inning.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2024
  • Score: MCLA 2, Opponent 5
  • Records: MCLA Trailblazers 3-8 (MASCAC 0-0) | RPI Engineers 6-4 (Liberty 0-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MCLA were the first ones to get on the scoreboard, putting up a pair of runs in the second inning with the help of only one hit and some patience at the plate. Chris Vargas started the rally by working a walk to lead off the inning. Josh Bologh then followed Vargas' lead with a walk of his own before both were advanced a base by a sacrifice bunt from Joshua Bissaillon. Vargas came around to score on an RBI groundout to the second baseman by Ty Mazzeo. William Walsh then doubled the Trailblazers' lead with a single rightfield to plate Bologh.
  • In the bottom of the frame, RPI responded with two runs of its own to tie the game at two.
  • As the weather started to pick up, the Engineers put together a rally with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game would be called due to rain after the top of the sixth inning.
  • Mike Nelson picked up the win for RPI, improving to 2-0, while Elyjah Garneau took his first loss of the season, moving to 0-1.
