SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— The MCLA Baseball team dropped a pair of nonconference games against Springfield College this afternoon at Archie Allen Field. The Trailblazers were shutout in the opener 3-0 and fell 4-1 in game two. With the sweep, Springfield improves to 10-6 while MCLA falls to 3-10.

Game One         Springfield 3      MCLA 0

With neither team threatening through four and a half innings, the hosts were finally able to break through when Michael Lapere (1-for-3) scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. During the same at-bat Micheal Barrett (1-for-3, RBI) singled up the middle scoring Joseph Traversa (2-for-3) and later scored on a fielding error to make it 3-0 after five.

It looked like MCLA was poised to respond following a leadoff single Jayco Pena (2-for-3) in the top of the 6th, but the Pride immediately snuffed out the threat with a double play and went on to take game one, 3-0.

Springfield starting pitcher Connor Cavarly (W, 1-0) went six scoreless innings allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out ten batters. Matthew Robinson (S, 2) earned the save. MCLA's Rob Correia (L, 1-1) pitched 4.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned), six hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Game Two         Springfield 4      MCLA 1

Springfield jumped out early in game two as Adam Fine (2-for-4, RBI) scored on a Barrett sacrifice fly and Traversa (1-for-3) scored on an error to make it 2-0 after one.

A Ty Mazzeo (1-for-3) one-out base hit in the top of the second followed by a pair of walks and two wild pitches would ultimately score the centerfielder to give MCLA their only run of the day.

The Pride answered in the bottom half with Fine driving in Ryan Duffy (1-for-2) and add an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th to ensure the sweep, 4-1.

Springfield's Nate Kelleher-Mochak (W, 3-1) went the distance allowing just one run, two hits and two walks while striking out ten. MCLA's Joshua Bissaillon (L, 0-2) pitched five innings allowing four runs (three earned), seven hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the loss.

Both teams open conference play this week with Springfield hosting Salve Regina on Tuesday at 3pm and MCLA hosting MASCAC rival Worcester State on Thursday at 3pm.
