FItchburg State Sweeps Doubleheader to Take Season Series Over Baseball

FITCHBURG, Mass. – The MCLA Baseball team wrapped up their MASCAC series with the Fitchburg State Falcons with a doubleheader this afternoon at Michael P. Riccards Field. Chris Vargas and Dariel Rodriguez both hit homeruns for the Trailblazers while Joseph Abt, Maxwell Riordan, Jacob Hurrell, and Adam Koza went yard for the Falcons enroute to taking both ends of the twin bill.

HOW IT WENT DOWN
- Game #1
- MCLA plated the game's first runs in the top of the first inning, scoring two runs on two hits. Ben Jacob (Pittsfield, MA) led off with a single to center and moved to second when Joshua Bissaillon (East Greenbush, NY) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Castillo (Ozone Park, NY). Jacob came around to score when Josh Bologh (Waterbury, CT) reached on an error. Two batters later Joe Sardo (Great Neck, NY) brought Bissaillon around with a single into centerfield.
- The Falcons clawed back a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Nolan Hills.
- Fitchburg added three runs in both the third and fourth innings. The third inning runs all coming on a three-run homer by Maxwell Riordan while Joseph Abt did the same in the fourth inning.
- In the fifth and sixth innings the Falcons salted away the victory, scoring five in the fifth and eight more in the sixth.
- MCLA added two runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI double by Michael Wormuth (Wynantskill, NY) and a sacrifice fly by Rafael Castilo, Jr. (Bronx, NY).
- Fitchburg's Joseph Stawski went six and a third, scattering eight hits and striking out three to pick up his first win of the season. The Trailblazers' Nate Morse (Holyoke, MA) took the loss to fall to 3-5.
- Game #2
- The Falcons got a two-run home run from Adam Koza in the bottom of the first to cap off a three-run first inning.
- MCLA's Chris Vargas got one of the runs back when he led off in the top of the second inning with a no doubt solo homerun to left field.
- Fitchburg scored two runs in both the second and third innings before adding five in the fourth inning, capped by a three-run homerun to right by Jacob Hurrell to grow their lead to 9-1.
- The teams combined for 13 runs in the sixth, the Trailblazers scored five in the top of the frame and the Falcons responded with eight in the bottom of the frame. Dariel Rodriguez (Bronx, NY) started the MCLA inning with a home run to left field and then Caleb Welcome (Rensselaer, NY) was hit by a pitch. Two batters later Jacob doubled into the left field corner to chase Welcome home. Bissaillon followed with a walk and gave way to pinch runner Lakoda Drowne (Athol, MA). Both Jacob and Drowne advanced on a wild pitch and Jacob scored on a ground out to third by TJ Platt (Amsterdam, NY). Wormuth drove home his second run of the afternoon when he doubled to left, scoring Drowne. A pair of wild pitches would allow Wormuth to score.
- In the bottom of the inning, the Falcons scored eight runs on seven hits including five RBI singles to secure the 20-6 win.
- Fitchburg's Owen Corcoran went five and two thirds, striking out three to gather the win, improving to 3-1. Bissaillon fell to 0-5 for MCLA.
UP NEXT:
On Monday, MCLA will be back in action when it travels to Westfield State and Hagan Field for a MASCAC matchup with the Owls. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
