Mills scores 19 points, but Men’s Basketball drops 91-80 decision at the Purple and Gold Classic to SUNY Delhi

Williamstown, MA- Freshman Jayden Mills led MCLA tonight with career highs of 19 points and 12 rebounds but the Trailblazers fell to SUNY Delhi 91-80 in the opening day of the Williams College Purple and Gold Classic.

A Mills layup with 13:22 left in the first half would put MCLA up 9-6. Over the next five and half minutes however, SUNY Delhi would go on a 20-6 run jumping out to a 26-15 lead. Still down 11, MCLA would storm back catching the Broncos at 28-28 after three Dylan Morris-Gray free throws.

SUNY Delhi would counterpunch again, this time going on a 9-0 run pushing the lead to as many as ten with just under a minute to play in the half. A Nazier Carter jumper would trim the Trailblazer deficit to 43-35 heading into the locker room.

The Broncos would maintain a near double-digit lead for most of the second half with MCLA twice cutting the lead to 5 points. A Reece Racette layup with just over six and a half minutes left would put MCLA down 71-64 but a Gustarling Louis 3-pointer just a minute later would put SUNY Delhi up ten and the Broncos would cruise the rest of the way leading by as many sixteen, but eventually taking the win, 91-80.

SUNY Delhi would put four players in double figures. Lester McCarthy would finish with a game-high 20 points, while teammates Marven Louissaint with 15, Mavenson Therneus with 14 and Fauzi Cizmesija-Ulme with 10 points, all had strong performances.

In addition to Mills, Morris-Gray would finish with 16 point and freshman Amon Moore would come off the bench and chip in 14.

Though SUNY Delhi hit just 4 of 22 3-point attempts, the Broncos would end up shooting 44.2% from the field. MCLA would shoot 43.3% from the field including 6 of 19 from beyond the arc.

The Broncos turned MCLA over 26 times resulting in 34 points.  

Both teams are back in action tomorrow at the Purple and Gold Classic as SUNY Delhi take on host Williams at 3pm while MCLA will battle Clarks Summit at 1pm.
