Men’s Hockey Secure First MASCAC Victory with Win Over Framingham State

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The MCLA Men's Ice Hockey team welcomed Framingham State to the Peter W. Foote Veterans Memorial Rink this evening. The Trailblazers took home the team's first-ever MASCAC victory, downing the Rams by a score of 2-1. The conference victory was the first for the program since being reinstated this season. The last conference win for MCLA occurred on February 14, 2003, when the Trailblazers clobbered UMass-Boston 11-1 for their final ECAC victory.
THE BASICS:
- Date: Saturday, January 20, 2024
- Score: Framingham 1, MCLA 2
- Records: Framingham Road 6-10-0 (MASCAC 6-7-0) | MCLA Trailblazers 3-13-1 (MASCAC 0-0-0)
HIGHLIGHTS
- Framingham State was the first on the board, scoring the lone goal of the first period with just under three and a half minutes left. Patrick Colgan (16:31, unassisted) skated across the front of the net and lifted a shot under the crossbar for his third goal of the season.
- MCLA evened the score in the second period with a power play goal by Luke Rhoss (5:59, assisted by Jack Bortle). The goal was the fourth of the season for Rhoss, while Bortle recorded his first collegiate career assist.
- The Trailblazers doubled their lead in the third period. Having successfully killed off a five-minute major penalty less than two minutes earlier, MCLA's Sean Schifferl (14:18, unassisted) scored what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. The goal was Schifferl's fifth of the season, bringing his season point total to 10. It was also the first collegiate career game-winning goal for the freshman from Fort Myers, FL.
- MCLA's Mathew Gover set a new season-high with 60 saves on 61 shots on goal to improve his season record to 2-10-1. On the flip side of that coin, Framingham State's Trevor Stenberg stopped 25 of 27 shots but was saddled with the tough-luck loss, dropping his record to 5-6-0.
- MCLA enjoyed a 47 to 33 edge in the faceoff circle this evening. The Trailblazers were so successful in controlling the puck drop that all four players who took faceoffs for the hosts finished with a greater than 50% success rate. Cody White was 12 for 23, Charlie Addesa was 10 for 18, Easton Moore was 14 for 20, and Quinn Murphy was 11 for 19.
