SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The MCLA Men's Ice Hockey team kicked off their second season since reinstatement on the road this evening, traveling to the Cairns Arena for a non-conference matchup with the St. Michael's College Purple Knights. Freshman Sam Zis scored his first career goal while five different Purple Knights scored in a 5-1 win for St. Michael's College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Michael's scored first on a power play when Quinn McCarthy (PP goal at 2:23, assisted by David Ciancio and Brennan McFarland) picked up a loose puck behind the net and slid it under the MCLA goalie.
  • MCLA evened the score just after the midpoint of the first period when freshman forward Sam Zis (Boulder, CO  / Connecticut Chiefs) scored his first career goal with assists credited to Charlie Addesa (Andover, MA / Worcester Railers) and Connor Nagy (Trenton, MI / Finlandia University) were both credit with assists.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Purple Knights retook the lead when McFarland (12:32, assisted by SJ LeComte and Ashton Allain) scored to send the teams into the first intermission.
  • St. Michael's picked up their second power-play goal of the night, with the second period's only goal coming at 14:07. Ciancio scored it and was assisted by LeComte and Case Kantgias.
  • The hosts tagged on two more insurance goals in the third period, scoring less than a minute apart early in the frame. The first goal was credited to Jack Bavis (5:32, assisted by Nick Wracker and Moseley Schwartz), and the second went to Jack Tuite (6:11, assisted by Kantgias and Bavis).
  • Cole Manahan scored the win to improve to 1-0-0 after stopping 19 of the 20 shots faced. Mathew Gover made 39 saves but still saw his record fall to 0-1-0.
