HIGHLIGHTS
- The Corsairs broke through for the night's first goal just over three minutes into the game. The goal was credited to Hunter Scanlon (at 3:20, unassisted).
- MCLA responded less than five minutes later when sophomore forward Sean Schifferl (Fort Myers, FL / N.H. Monarchs) forced a turnover by the Corsairs in their defensive zone. Schifferl's knocking the puck off the stick of the UMass player sent it directly into the path of sophomore forward Easton Moore (Red Deer, AB / Florida Eels) who kept the puck onside and skated along the left side boards. As Moore skated towards the net, Schifferl crashed through the slot and took the feed from Moore for an easy shot into the left side of the net after the goalie had slid across the crease expecting Moore's pass to go to sophomore forward Cade Herrera (Brentwood, CA / Seahawks H.C) who was waiting at the right post. The goal was Schifferl's second of the year.
- With the teams concluding the first frame tied at one goal apiece, the Trailblazers took their first lead of the night 4:26 into the second period when sophomore defenseman Colin Ogborn (Linwood, NJ / Philadelphia H.C.) scored his first collegiate goal when his wrister from the high slot of a pass from senior defenseman Matthew Castillo (Ozone Park, NY / Salem State Univ.). Sophomore forward Luke Rhoss (Monroe, NY / Philadelphia H.C.) had come out of a scrum in the corner with the puck and sent it along the boards to Castillo. The assists were the second of the season for both Castillo and Rhoss.
- Ogborn's tally was the only one for either team in the second period, but the Corsairs wasted little time in the third period before they tied the game back up at two all. The goal was scored by Tyler Stewart (1:24, assisted by Alex Walker).
- Just over five minutes later, MCLA again jumped in front, with sophomore forward Charlie Addesa (Andover, MA / Worcester Railers) knocking home his first goal of the year as part of a five-minute power play for the Trailblazers. Addesa played a bit of a give-and-go near the left-hand corner, passing to Moore under the goal line and crashing to the net for the put-away.
- Moore would give MCLA a two-goal lead when he scored a shorthanded goal with just over 12 and a half minutes off the clock. After a sprawling save from sophomore goalie Mathew Gover (Atkinson, NH / East Coast Wizards), the Trailblazers cleared the puck out to the Corsair's zone where sophomore forward Christopher Gallagher (Albany. NY / Islanders H.C.) was able to body a UMass defender off the puck and left it for Moore who was following for support. Moore again went below the goal line but then came around the front of the net and slipped it through the goalie for his second goal of the year. The assist was Gallagher's second of the season.
- Sophomore forward Quinn Murphy (Champaign, IL / Philadelphia H.C.) added an insurance goal to go up 5-2 as the clock clicked under five minutes remaining. With Addesa chomping at the bit to get out of the penalty box, Murphy skated through the neutral zone, passed the puck to Addesa, who had overtaken him on the play and drew the goalie to Addesa's side of the crease. Addesa then passed back to Murphy to put the puck into the wide-open left side of the goal. The goal was Murphy's first of the season, and the assist was Addesa's fourth.
- The insurance goal came in handy for the Trailblazers because UMass cut the lead back to just two only 26 seconds later, with Tommy Madden's long shot for the right side boards after a pass from Nolan Wutzke.
- Gover would finish the night with 40 saves and upped his record to 2-11-0, while the Corsairs' Marshall McKallip fell to 2-3-0 after recording 34 saves on 39 shots.
