Men's Soccer falls 1-0 to Bears in MASCAC opener

North Adams, MA- The visiting Bridgewater State men's soccer team received a second half goal from Kevin Roberts and the Bear defense made it stand in a hard fought 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletics Conference matchup (MASCAC) at Shewcraft Field.  The win was the Bears first of 2019.  They are now 1-5-1 overall but more importantly stand at 1-0 in the MASCAC.  MCLA dips to 1-5 overall and is 0-1 in conference play.

The two teams didn't generate much offense in the opening half of play combining for just 13 shots, but only three were on target.  The pace quickened in the second half and a hustle play from the Bears proved critical.

BSU controlled the ball in the midfield and sent a through ball towards the right corner flag.  A hustling David Nelson ran it down just before heading out of play and sent a cross to a streaking Roberts.  He ripped a shot from close range that beat MCLA keeper Sam Edge for the eventual game winner.  The goal was the second of the season for Roberts.

MCLA mustered up six shots in the second half, but just one was on net that BSU's Nate Morgado easily handled.

The physical game saw 31 fouls and the teams combined for five cards.

The Bears owned a 16-11 shot advantage and a 9-4 mark in corners.  Morgado (1-5-1) earned his first win of the season stopping two shots in the contest.

Edge (1-5) absorbed the loss for MCLA collecting five saves on the night.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Sage at 7pm.
