Men’s Soccer battles to a 0-0 draw with Westfield State

Westfield, MA- Quality scoring chances were at a premium this afternoon at Alumni Field as host Westfield State and MCLA battled to a scoreless draw. With the result the Owls move to 0-6-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the MASCAC. The Trailblazers move to 3-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

The best chance for either team came in the closing seconds of the first half when MCLA senior Max Whalen (Pittsfield, MA) stepped up to a loose Westfield State ball and connected on a 40 yard pass up the left side to first year Justice Daniels (Pittsfield, MA). From there Daniels sized up the only remaining defender, beat him to the outside and forced Owl junior goalkeeper Emilio Mancuso (Ludlow, MA) to make a shoestring save with his left foot to keep the game scoreless headed into halftime.

Coming out of the break in the 49th it appeared for a moment that Westfield State may have broken through when first year Bryant Keeney (Westfield, MA) let a shot go from nearly 30 yards out. Fortunately for the Trailblazers, the shot sailed just over the crossbar and game remained tied.

In the 76th minute a low bouncing shot from distance by Westfield State junior Nick Brown (Southwick, MA) looked like it could be trouble. However, MCLA senior keeper Sam Edge (Williamstown, MA) was able to make the save and eliminate the threat.

Edge made 6 saves on the day and moves to 2-3-1 on the season. Westfield State goalkeeper Emilio Mancuso made 7 saves and moves to 0-1-1.

Junior Tyler Cotting (Holliston, MA) and senior Wesley Call (Ashby, MA) each put 2 shots on net for MCLA.

The Owls outshot the Trailblazers 19-13 and had a slight advantage in corners (6-5).

Both teams will be in action again on Tuesday at 7pm as Westfield State will host Castleton and MCLA travels to Keene State.
