Men's Tennis drops spring opener to RIC 8-1

Providence, R.I.-Junior Alex Werchadlo (Woonsocket, RI) came away with a victory at No. 1 singles and teamed up with freshman Ben Proctor (Cumberland, RI) for a win at No. 1 doubles as the Rhode Island College men's tennis team stormed past MCLA, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts in the season-opener for both squads.

The win snaps a seven-match losing skid for Rhode Island College (1-0), dating back to last season.

The Anchormen swept doubles across the board to jump out ahead of MCLA (0-2) early on the contest. Werchadlo and Proctor won (8-5) at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Mike McCaffrey (Cumberland, RI) and junior Matt Collins (Rumford, RI) cruised to victory at No. 2 doubles (8-1). Junior Ted James (West Greenwich, RI) and freshman Cory Duquette (Warwick, RI) picked up the shutout at No. 3 doubles (8-0).

Werchadlo was one of five different Anchormen to record victories in their respective singles flights. Werchadlo (6-0, 6-1) held off senior Dan Nesti (Pittsfield, MA) at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Taylor Krowitz (Lunenburg, MA) tallied the lone victory of the day for the Trailblazers at No. 2 singles (6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4)).

McCaffrey won at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-3) and James was victorious at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1), while Collins and Duquette both recorded shutouts (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles, respectively.

MCLA is back in action tomorrow when they travel to Thomas College for their NAC opener
