Men's Tennis drops nail biter to Green Mountain 5-4 in season debut

Bennington, VT- The visiting Green Mountain Men's Tennis program picked up a 5-4 season opening win over MCLA at the Bennington Tennis Center.  GMC's Thomas Grunow collected the decisive point in the sixth singles slot winning in three sets.

MCLA drops to 0-1 on the season while the Eagles are now 3-1 overall.

The Trailblazers took the opening doubles match behind Aaron Goldsmith and Rob Wabshinak as they defeated Connor Braden and Truman Cressey 8-6 in the pro style set.  The Eagles would take the other two matches and head into singles play up 2-1.

Braden defeated Goldsmith in the top singles slot in straight sets to push out to a 3-1 lead.  MCLA would rally though taking three of the next four singles matches to knot things up.  Wabshinak won a key three setter defeating Cressey 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 for the first singles point.  Michael Rooney won another three set match in the fourth slot, while Jeffrey Mason won 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth to tie the match at 4-4.

In the sixth slot, the match pitted MCLA's Jared Freeman and Grunow.  Freeman would win the first set 6-4 before dropping the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.  

The match lasted over four hours as three singles matches went three sets. 

Green Mountain's Grey McCampbell and Grunow each earned two points in the win.

MCLA is off until next Saturday when they open NAC play at Colby Sawyer.
