MCLA swept by Sage in Softball

Troy, NY- The MCLA softball team was swept this afternoon by Sage College.  The Trailblazers dropped the opener 9-1 before losing a heartbreaker 2-1 in the nightcap.  With the losses, MCLA falls to 4-10.  Sage improves to 3-9 with the sweep.

In the opener, MCLA scored a run in the top of the first, but Sage quickly answered.  The hosts crossed the plate four times in the bottom half to seize control.  The Gators used three hits, a walk, and an error in the inning.  Sage tallied single runs in the second and fourth innings sandwiched around three in the third to earn the five inning mercy rule victory.

Amanda Meczywor was tagged with the loss for MCLA.

In the nightcap, MCLA starting pitcher Rachel Quackenbush was in total control after the Trailblazers gave her a 1-0 edge in the opening frame.  Kendra Hobbs doubled and came around to score on Meczywor's RBI hit.

Quackenbush would come out firing striking out the first four Gators.  The hosts finally got to her in the fourth inning though.  An infield single led off the frame.  After a bunt failed to advance the runner, consecutive errors and a balk allowed two runs to score.

MCLA went quietly in the fifth and sixth innings before making a bit of noise in the seventh.  A two out single from Michaela DiNicola and a bunt single from Hobbs put the tying run in scoring position for Meczywor, however she struck out looking to end the game.

Quackenbush finished her afternoon with 13 strikeouts and allowed just two hits.  Both runs were unearned.

MCLA is back in action on Friday as they host Fitchburg State in the conference opener.
