Softball drops twinbill at Skidmore

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College softball team swept MCLA 7-6 and 8-1 in non-league action Thursday evening at Wagner Park.
 
The Thoroughbreds (9-13) needed nine innings to win the first game, while the second game ended in the fifth due to darkness. The Trailblazers are 4-12.
 
In the first game, Mackenzie Whiting drew a no-out bases loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth to win give Skidmore the 7-6 win.
 
Down 5-3, Skidmore scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to lead 6-5.Abby Shea and Lizette Roman-Johnston had RBI singles to key the rally.
 
MCLA tied it in the top of the seventh with an unearned run to force extra innings.  Abigail Lucas reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single by Angelica Perfido.
 
Skidmore got out of trouble in the eighth when MCLA had the bases loaded with one out.  Thoroughbred reliever Amanda Carilli got a third-to-home fielders choice and then won a battle with number three hitter Rachel Quackenbush, striking her out on six pitches.
 
In the Skidmore ninth, Roman-Johnston got hit with a pitch and went to third on a Lauren Fortunato single. Cassie Fishkin drew a five-pitch walk to load the bases, setting up Whiting's full count game-winning walk.
 
Roman-Johnston finished 2-4 with two runs and an RBI. Fishkin was 2-4 with a double. Carilli got the win in relief of Fishkin.  She went six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.
 
Sierra Bailey was 3-5 with a double, two runs, and an RBI for MCLA.  Quackenbush was 2-4 with a solo home run for MCLA. She took the loss in relief of starter Amanda Meczywor, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings. She struck out eight and walked three.
 
Carilli earned her second win of the day in the second game, allowing one run on three hits over five innings, while striking out four. She didn't give up a walk.
 
Skidmore took control early, scoring three runs in the first. Dani DeGregory opened the inning with a triple and scored on a Roman-Johnston single. Lauren Fortunato then drilled her second home run of the season to deep center for the 3-0 lead.
 
Perfido accounted for MCLA's run with a two-out solo home run in the second.
 
The Thoroughbreds scored four more in the third to go up 7-1. Fortunato had an RBI triple and scored on a ground out. Casey Attonitorecorded her first collegiate home run, a solo shot over the right field fence and Kristina Foley had an RBI double for the fourth run.
 
Skidmore tagged on one more in the fourth when Mary Farrington opened the inning with a pinch hit single and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Attonito.
 
Fortunato finished 3-3 with two runs and three RBI and Roman-Johnston was 2-2 with two runs.
 
Perfido was 2-2 for the Trailblazers.
