Softball swept by Sage in non conference action 3-2, 10-0

Troy, NY- The MCLA Softball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker in nine innings of game one, then fell 10-0 in a five inning affair as they lost to Sage College this afternoon in Troy, NY.  The Gators are now 14-10 on the season while MCLA sits at 8-12 overall.

Game One-

The opener was a pitchers dual as MCLA's Rachel Quackenbush and Sage's Lindsay Brace tossed the first seven frames in scoreless fashion.  It wasn't until the international tiebreaker system came into play in the eighth inning that allowed runs to come across.

MCLA opened the scoring in the top of the eighth when Jenn Sicinski drove in Quackenbush, who was placed on second to start the frame.  Sage avoided a deeper hole by getting a strikeout to end the frame, but MCLA had a 1-0 lead with Sage coming to bat.

Sage tied it with an RBI single from Allison Ford in the bottom of the eighth.  MCLA would once again tack on a run in the ninth, this time on a Berghela single.  The Gators kept it a one run deficit by cutting down Alex Romano at the plate.

Sage won it in the bottom of the inning when their courtesy runner was quickly sacrificed to third base with one out.  A single from Morgan Dunn knotted the score at 1-1.  Jessica Adams then doubled placing runners at second and third with just one out setting the stage for Kiersten Duncan.  She would promptly drive a ball in to the gap ending the game in walk off fashion for the Gators.

Brace went the distance allowing just six hits and struck out 12 Trailblazers as she improved to 7-4 overall.  She worked around five walks.  Duncan ended with three hits to pace the offense.

Quackenbush tossed 8.2 innings and absorbed the loss.  She allowed 7 hits and struck out 7 in defeat.  Berghela ended with a pair of hits to lead the team.

Game Two-

Sage wasted little time in taking control of game two.  They scored six times in the bottom of the first off MCLA's Kate Henault to seize control.  Jennifer Onwe had the key hit belting a three run homer to make it 6-0 in favor of Sage.

The Gators would add two more in the second, a single run in the third and fourth innings to round out the scoring.  Onwe again was in the highlights ripping a solo homer in the third inning for Sage.

Kate Kovage did the rest tossing all five innings and fanning three Trailblazers to earn the shutout victory.  She improves to 5-3.

Henault was tagged with the loss tossing all four frames for MCLA.

The Trailblazers are back in action on Saturday when they host Fitchburg State in MASCAC play at Noon.
