Softball breezes past MMA in MASCAC twinbill

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. --  Freshman Chelsea Coleman (Brookfield, Conn.) collected five hits and drove in eight runs to lead MCLA to a sweep of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference softball doubleheader from Massachusetts Maritime Monday afternoon by scores of 21-1 in the opener and 17-2 in the nightcap in five inning league games played at Alison Rollins Field.

The visiting Trailblazers (11-13, 5-3 MASCAC) took control of both contests in their respective opening at-bats, scoring 10 runs in the first inning of the opener while plating eight tallies in the first frame of the nightcap.  Senior Sam Boyle (Pittsfield, Mass.) and sophomore Michaela DiNicola (Lanesboro, Mass.) each rapped out four hits and drove in four runs as part of a 14-hit opening game attack for MCLA, which also received two hits and three RBI from freshman Katie Berghela (Watervliet, N.Y.).

Berghela, who finished the day with four hits and matched Coleman's eight RBI, collected two safeties and plated five runs in the second contest for the Trailblazers, who received three hits from Coleman and sophomore Francesca Belli (Watertown, Mass.) as part of a 16-hit attack.  DiNicola and seniors Angelica Perfido (Whately, Mass.), Abby Lucas (Braintree, Mass.) and Jenn Sicinski(Shelton, Conn.) joined Berghela with two hits each in the nightcap for the visitors, as junior Katie Henault (West Warwick, R.I.) picked up both wins inside the circle for MCLA by allowing a combined three hits and an earned run while striking out three.

Freshman Brooke Miles (Lynn, Mass.) plated the host Buccaneers' (2-16, 0-8 MASCAC) run in the opener with an RBI double that followed a single off the bat of senior Cassie Sanderson (North Dighton, Mass.), and Massachusetts Maritime's two tallies in the nightcap came in the second on an error and a fielder's choice grounder by sophomore Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.). Sophomore Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) suffered the opening pitching setback for the Buccaneers, while freshman Rachel Gardner (Bourne, Mass.) doubled and scored a run in the second outing while suffering the setback inside the circle for the hosts.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wheelock in a non-league doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at Alison Rollins Field beginning at 3:30 p.m., while MCLA heads to Williamstown, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon to square off with Williams in a non-league twinbill that also begins at 3:30 p.m.
