Softball sweeps twinbill with Lyndon State 14-0, 10-3

North Adams, MA- The MCLA softball team enjoyed their time at the Zavattaro Athletics Complex on Wednesday as they swept a doubleheader from Lyndon State.  Kara Adams tossed a complete game one hitter and Alanza Quinones drove in four runs to lead the Trailblazers to a 14-0 five inning win in game one and Kaylyn Holliday homered in game two to lead the offense as MCLA took that one 10-3.  MCLA is now 4-12 on the season while the Hornets drop to 0-6.

Game One

Adams was efficient in the circle for MCLA as she allowed a hit in the first inning, but shut down the Hornets the rest of the way as she improved to 1-2 on the season.  She struck out a pair of Lyndon State batters on the afternoon.

The MCLA offense wasted little time in taking control as they scored five runs in each of the first two innings.  Senior Kaitlyn Berghela started things off with a triple and then scored on an overthrow for an early 1-0 lead.  Quinones then singled to left field scoring Adams and Kayla Baker for an early 3-0 lead.  Fran Belli would add her own two run single to give the Trailblazers a 5-0 lead after an inning of play.

In the second inning, Kaylyn Holliday ripped an RBI double to left field and Quinones followed with her own double making it 7-0.  A sacrifice fly from Ashley Wilson brought home another run and when Julia Parker singled home Wilson, it was 10-0 in favor of MCLA.

The Trailblazers would add a run in the third on Nevada Nelsen's RBI hit and then rounded out the scoring with three runs in the fourth highlighted by Adams' double and Quinones fourth RBI of the day.

Quinones went 2-4 with four RBI's to lead the offense.  Berghela and Baker had two hits.  Adams scored three runs for the Trailblazers as well.

Game Two

The Hornets started out fast against MCLA starter Samantha Feinstein.  Madeline DeGroot started the scoring with an RBI double to right field scoring Kiya DeWitt for an early 1-0 lead.  When Amber Roberts singled home DeGroot, they lead 2-0 before MCLA came to bat.

MCLA answered though in the bottom of the inning.  Kaitlyn Berghela scored on a wild pitch to get the hosts on the board and then three straight RBI singles from Ashley Wilson, McKayla Brown, and Trinity Shellard made it 4-2 after an inning of play.

Kaylyn Holliday delivered her third home run of the season in the second to extend the lead to 5-2, but Lyndon State responded with a run in the third to trim it to just 5-3.

MCLA would take control scoring three times in the fourth inning.  Holliday started the rally with an RBI single.  Kara Adams followed with another RBI knock and Alanza Quinones continued her productive day with an RBI hit to make it 8-3.

The Trailblazers would tack on two more runs in the sixth as Quinones doubled home Holliday and Wilson's sacrifice fly completed the scoring.

Feinstein (2-5) settled down after the rough first inning to record her second win of the season.  She went the distance and struck out six Hornets while allowing just four hits.

MCLA pounded out 15 hits in the contest, 12 of which came from the top five in the batting order.  Berghela was 3-4 with a pair of runs scored while Adams also ended the game 3-4.  Baker, Holliday, and Quinones all had two hits in the nightcap.

The Trailblazers are scheduled to play Bay Path tomorrow at 3:30pm in another twinbill.
