Softball season comes to a close with pair of setbacks at Salem State

SALEM, MASS. -- Iliesh Burney (Bristol, Conn.) fired a no-hitter on "Senior Day" as Salem State blanked MCLA 8-0 in five innings in the first game of their scheduled MASCAC doubleheader on Saturday. Burney recorded three strikeouts and did not walk a batter, becoming the first Vikings' pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Lauren DiCredico (Tewksbury, MA) beat Mass Maritime 14-0 in 2014. Salem State came back and shutout the Trailblazers in game two, 7-0 behind a four-hitter from Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.). Salem State is now 13-20 on the season and 7-7 in the MASCAC. MCLA ends their year 6-22 and 2-12 in conference.
Salem State honored five members of its senior class as Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.), Meghan Black (Winchendon, Mass.) Marisa Sanchez (Framingham, Mass.), Iliesh Burney (Bristol, Conn.) and April Adams (Burlington, Mass.) all played in their final home game on Saturday.
Game 1
The Vikings scored an unearned run in the first before scoring three times in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Samantha Holey (Lynn, Mass.) plated two runs on a fielder's choice and Chloe Manousos (Lowell, Mass.) scored the third on a steal of home.
Four runs in the fifth ended the game, highlighted by a two-run double by Dominique Del Vecchio (Stoneham, Mass.). The sixth Trailblazers' error of the game made it 7-0 and Sydney Chiasson (Hudson, Mass.) scored the eighth run on a fielder's choice.
Samantha Feinstein (South Yartmouth, Mass.) took the loss, going 4.0 innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits with a strikeout.
Game 2
MCLA recorded their first hit of the day on a Nevada Nelsen (Colonie, N.Y.) single in the second.
Salem State scored three runs in the third on three hits to take a 3-0 lead. April Adams (Burlington, Mass.) scored the first run on an RBI single before an error and RBI groundout by Manousos plated two more.
A single by Jen Crovo (Melrose, Mass.) and a fielder's choice made it 5-0 in the fifth as Black continued to cruise, allowing single hits in the fourth through sixth innings.
Salem State made it 7-0 in the sixth on Crovo's third hit of the game.
Black retired the side in the seventh to earn the win. Black finished the game with a pair of strikeouts and walks and allowed just one runner to reach third base.
Crovo had three RBI in the game for the Vikings while Nelsen went 2-for-3 for the Trailblazers.
