Women’s Hockey Nipped by Plymouth State, 2-1

HOLDERNESS, N.H. – The MCLA Women's Ice Hockey team kicked off the second half of their season this evening with a road trip to Plymouth State for a MASCAC tilt with the Panthers at the Hanaway Rink. After giving up a pair of goals in the first period, the Trailblazers turned into a lockdown defensive unit on a night where Juliette Barney stood on her head in the net, making 41 stops, and Alexandrea Bednar scored her ninth goal of the year.
THE BASICS:
- Date: Friday, January 10, 2025
- Score: MCLA 1, Plymouth State 2
- Records: MCLA Trailblazers 7-7-0 (MASCAC 1-4-0) | Plymouth State University Panthers 7-4-0 (MASCAC 4-0-0)
- Series History: Plymouth State leads the all-time series 2-0, including a 3-2 win on December 6th this season in the teams' first-ever meeting.
HIGHLIGHTS
- The Panthers were less than hospitable hosts, scoring the first goal of the game Emily DeSimone was encamped in front of the net and put home the rebound of a shot by Jamie Steinmetz with about five and half minutes off the clock. Plymouth then added another goal with just over seven minutes left in the period Katie Maloney's shot from the right point bounced off of the MCLA netminder and the right post and then into the net.7:01
- The Trailblazers cut that lead in half in the closing seconds of the first period with a power play goal from senior forward Alexandrea Bednar (Vita, MB / Univ. of Wisconsin–Eau Claire). With the man advantage and the Trailblazers pressuring in front of the net, the Panthers failed to clear a shot by sophomore forward Nicolette Bardsley (Gilbertsville, PA / Chatham University), instead putting it directly on the tape of MCLA's sophomore forward Rebekah Ade (Yucca Valley, CA / New Jersey Colonials) from just outside the crease, Ade seeing the Trailblazers' second leading scorer wide open, quickly passed the puck to the senior for a quick one-timer from the goalie's right side as the netminder was more concerned with Bardsley spot in front. The goal would be Bednar's ninth of the year; the helper was Ade's fourth, and Bardsley was credited with her fifth assist.
- If you need goals to be scored, the second and third periods were not for you. If you enjoy an exciting edge-of-your-seat defensive struggle, this is where you want to be. Over the final two frames, the Trailblazers killed off four Panther power plays, allowing only a combined eight shots. In the second period, Plymouth outshot MCLA 11-4; in the third period, it was a 17-0 edge for the home team.
- Karlee Lehner picked up the win for the Panthers, improving to 6-2-0 after stopping five of the six shots on goal. Junior goalie Juliette Barney (Braintree, MA / Anna Maria College) suffered the tough luck defeat, dropping her record to 3-5-0 despite making 41 saves.
