Lacrosse falls to MMA 16-8 on senior day

North Adams, MA- The visiting Massachusetts Maritime women's lacrosse team received five goals apiece from Stephanie Hunt and Ashley Solari as they earned their first victory of 2017 by defeating the MCLA Trailblazers 16-8this afternoon at Shewcraft field.  With the win, the Buccaneers improve to 1-8 overall and 1-4 in the MASCAC.  MCLA drops to 3-9 and is 0-5 in league play.

Solari and Hunt each added an assist in the win.  Heather Seggelin collected three goals while Cammi Balentine had two.

MCLA was paced by Kim Granito who ended with four goals after playing the second half.

The Buccaneers held MCLA scoreless for through the first twenty one minutes of play as they built a 2-0 lead.  Heather Seggelin scored just 1:52 into the contest for a 1-0 lead before Ashley Solari tallied with 16:13 left in the half to make it 2-0 in favor of MMA.

MCLA would finally get on the board at the 9:01 mark when Mackenzie Cutler weaved her way through the defense slicing the lead to 2-1.  Natalie Caney would score at the 5:11 mark to tie it up at 2-2 before MMA closed the half on a 3-0 run to snag a 5-2 halftime lead.  Stephanie Hunt had a goal and an assist in the final spurt while Solari tallied her 100th career marker in the final seconds of the half.

Hunt would score three straight goals at the second half to increase the lead to 9-2 for MMA.   Heather Heggelin kept the run going with a marker following a Trailblazer timeout to make it 10-2.

A goal from Kim Granito finally broke the MCLA drought with 21:25 remaining, but MMA answered with a goal from Solari to regain momentum.  The teams traded goals and after Cammi Balentine scored, it was 12-4 Bucs.  The lead was never seriously threatened as MCLA got within eight on two occasions but no closer.

Mikayla Correia earned the win stopping 10 shots for the Bucs.  MMA owned a 35-21 shot advantage over MCLA.

Zoe Elwell took the loss for MCLA.

The Trailblazers will take on Westfield State on Tuesday evening.
