MCLA knocks off MASCAC front runner Fitchburg State 1-0

Fitchburg, MA- MCLA freshman Janelle Stannard collected her second game winning goal of the week  scoring in the 85th minute as the Trailblazers defeated MASCAC front runner Fitchburg State 1-0.  Stannard also tallied the game winner against Sage on Wednesday.

The Trailblazers earn a key MASCAC win, upping their conference mark to 2-2-1 (6-7-1 overall).  The Falcons suffer only their second loss this season (10-2-1) and their first in the MASCAC (4-1).   Fitchburg saw its 10 game unbeaten streak come to an end.

MCLA's Jen Wehner collected her third shutout of the season stopping 13 shots on the evening.

Fitchburg controlled the play throughout the opening half but could not score.  The second half was more balanced, however the game remained scoreless until the 85th minute.

Stannard beat Fitchburg keeper Jillian Kirouac for the game winner wrapping the ball inside the post from 10 yards out.  

Fitchburg outshot MCLA 19-8 on the night, but only held a 10-7 edge in the decisive half.

With the win, the Trailblazers strengthened their position in the MASCAC standings with two games remaining.  MCLA is off until next Saturday when they host rival Westfield State at 1pm.
