Trailblazers fall late to Pioneers 1-0

North Adams, MA - The MCLA Women's Soccer team dropped their home opener this afternoon to the Smith College as Allie Rooney's tally off a rebound in the 87th minute led the Pioneers to the season opening win.

The Trailblazers fall to 0-2 on the season while Smith is now 1-0.

The lone goal came late in the match when Pioneer midfielder Olivia Mallari ripped a shot that was blocked by a Trailblazer defender, but Rooney put the rebound in the upper left corner to put her team up 1-0.

A minute later the MCLA women pushed up field in a last ditch effort to tie the match. Trailblazer junior Lindsay Borbolla settled the ball and put a great shot on goal that bounced off the left post. Soon after, a foul was called on the Pioneers giving Borbolla one more shot to put her team on the board.  Her direct kick was blocked and MCLA never threatened again.

Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the game, while Smith College outshot MCLA 33-17.

Credit goes out to both defenses and goalies making big stops when the opportunities arose. Trailblazer goalie Danielle Heinsohn made 13 saves on the afternoon. Smith College keeper Cody Norris earned the shutout with five stops.

MCLA has their next game scheduled for this Saturday at Elms College.
