Women's Soccer draws with Fitchburg 1-1 in MASCAC tilt

FITCHBURG, Mass.– The Fitchburg State women's soccer team was in action this afternoon, playing the Trailblazers of MCLA to a 1-1 double overtime draw in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Elliot Field.

In the first half of play, Fitchburg State took the lead at the 23:22 mark as junior defender Samantha Zina settled a loose ball in front of the net and deposited the ball inside the far post for her first tally of the season for the 1-0 advantage. The Falcons nearly doubled their margin in the 26th minute when sophomore Sioban O'Connell headed a ball on frame, but Trailblazer net minder Kathryn Daly was able to turn the shot aside as Fitchburg State took a 1-0 lead into intermission.

Following intermission, MCLA knotted the score (1-1) at the 70:30 mark as junior midfielder Jackie Dwyer redirected a shot off the foot of sophomore Allison Davy and headed the ball into the back of net for her third goal of the season to send the game into extra time. In the overtime periods, neither team was able to generate offensive opportunity as both defense stood strong, resulting in the 1-1 double overtime draw.

Throughout the match Fitchburg State held a 24-16 advantage in shots, while also holding a slim 5-4 margin in corner kicks. In goal, junior Morgan Steele turned away six shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while Daly was stellar for MCLA, finishing with 13 saves for the visitors.

Fitchburg State (2-13-1, 0-4-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Mass. Maritime Academy at 7 p.m. MCLA (3-10-1, 1-4-1 MASCAC) will visit Rivier University on Tuesday for a contest starting at 5 p.m.
