Mangiardi scores, but MCLA women's soccer drops heartbreaking 2-1 OT game to SVC

North Adams, MA- The visiting Southern Vermont College women's soccer team tied the game in the 80th minute and then Taylor Mallett's goal in the waning seconds of overtime propelled the Mountaineers to a hard fought 2-1 win over MCLA this evening at rain soaked Shewcraft Field.  The win moves SVC to 2-4-1 overall while MCLA slips to 1-7 overall.

The heavy rain was a factor all night at Shewcraft field as neither team could control the ball in the opening half that ended scoreless.  Finally, in the 69th minute, MCLA broke through.  Lauren Mangiardi corralled a turnover and dribbled towards the top of the box.  She would rip a shot that would carom off SVC keeper Taylor Jarosz for a 1-0 lead.  The marker was Mangiardi's first of the season.

From there, the Mountaineers took over.  They would pressure MCLA from that point forward and finally found the equalizer in the 80th minute.  Kaidin Gauthier sent a cross into the box that Danielle Biggers knocked home to make it 1-1.  The goal was Biggers third of the season.  SVC had a few chances in regulation, but the game headed to OT.

The visitors would dominate the overtime session outshooting MCLA 7-0.  The game appeared destined for double overtime, but Mallett's heroics came with just twenty seconds left to secure the win.  Biggers sent a cross to Mallett who got just enough foot on it to slip past MCLA's Megan Richardson and earn the win for the Mountaineers.  It was her second goal of 2018.

The win for SVC made head coach Michael Zauzig the all time winningest coach in Mountaineer history.

Jarosz earned the win collecting 7 saves for SVC.

Richardson was saddled with the loss for MCLA stopping 8 shots on the evening.

MCLA is back in action on Friday night when they host Mass. Maritime at 6pm.
