NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—The MCLA Women's Soccer Team welcomed SUNY Delhi to Shewcraft Field this afternoon for a non-conference matchup with the Broncos. First-year goalkeeper Mallory Amirian made 20 saves for the Trailblazers, but the visitors' 26-9 edge in shots on net was just too much to overcome.

THE BASICS:

  • Date: Saturday, September 14, 2024
  • Score: SUNY Delhi 5, MCLA 2
  • Records: SUNY Delhi Broncos 2-2-0 (NAC 0-0-0) | MCLA Trailblazers 0-4-0 (MASCAC 0-0-0)
  • Series History: SUNY Delhi leads the all-time series between the teams at 2-0-0, including a 1-0 win in the teams' first-ever meeting last season at SUNY Delhi.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • SUNY Delhi was the first on the scoreboard when Gabrielle Avallone scored her second goal of the season in the 42nd minute when she chipped a shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box just out of the MCLA goalkeeper's reach. The score would remain 1-0 into the second half.
  • The Trailblazers found an equalizer in the 61st minute when first-year midfielder Catelyn Hodge (Schenectady, NY) scored her second goal of the season off a direct kick from about 30 yards out.
  • The Broncos retook the lead in the 66th minute when Estherline Carlson made MCLA pain for being unable to clear the ball from the penalty area and accepted a pass from Jordan DeNinno from about 16 yards out.
  • DeNinno extended the visitors' lead when she out-raced the Trailblazers' goalie to a ball from Gabrielle Avallone in the box and chipped the ball into the open net for her first goal of the year.
  • Carlson added her second tally of the game in the 81st minute, putting home a crossing pass from Lauryn Schmid inside the goal box. A little more than two minutes later, SUNY Delhi added another insurance goal when Lauren Dengler knocked home a pass from Avallone to make the score 5-1.
  • MCLA didn't give up as Kylie DeMaio (Roxbury, NY) scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career with just over four minutes left on the clock. Midfielder Allie Bayer (Boring, OR) started the play when she settled a punt from the Broncos' goalie near midfield back to Kaylee Strayer (Lancaster, OH). Strayer passed it back to Bayer, who forwarded the ball through midfield to Gwendolyn Duggan (Palmer, MA). Duggan then pushed the ball through the defense and ahead to DeMaio in stride for a goal from about 12 yards deep to set the final score at 5-2.
  • Trailblazers' keeper Mallory Amirian (Haverhill, MA) made a career-high 20 saves but still saw their record drop to 0-4-0. SUNY Delhi's Julia Ruppert stopped both shots she faced before giving way to Grainne Williams, who picked up her first win of the year, improving to 1-0-0 while making five saves.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Amirian's 20-save effort was the highest total for a Trailblazer netminder since Jillian Currier stopped 20 shots in the 2022 season finale against Bridgewater State on October 29, 2022. Currier also had games of 20 (at Utica 10/5), 25 (vs Westfield State 9/23), and 37 (at Worcester State 9/17) saves during the 2022 season.

UP NEXT:
