Women’s Soccer Shuts Out MMA In MASCAC Home Opener
NORTH ADAMS, Mass.—The MCLA Women's Soccer Team welcomed the Massachusetts Maritime Academy into Shewcraft Field this evening for their first home MASCAC game of the season. HIGHLIGHTS
- Sophomore midfielder Kylie DeMaio (Roxbury, NY) scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute. DeMaio brought the ball through midfield and passed the ball to graduate student midfielder Anna Lewis (North Monmouth, ME) along the right sideline. Lewis found junior forward Cidnee Frymire (Tonawanda, NY), who kicked it ahead to junior midfielder Jaydence Meribela (Volcano, HI). Meribela sent it back to first-year midfielder Catelyn Hodge (Schenectady, NY), who split the ball through a pair of defenders for DeMaio to catch up to the ball just outside the 18-yard box. DeMaio then shook off a defender and put a chip shot into the upper right corner of the net. The goal was DeMaio's fifth of the season, and the assist was Hodge's first of the year.
- Despite MCLA having the edge in the goal column, Mass. Maritime took the lead in almost every other category, outshooting the Trailblazers 26-10 with a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. MMA also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
- MCLA keeper Mallory Amirian (Haverhill, MA) made 14 saves and saw her record improve to 1-6-0. The Buccaneers' goalie picked up four saves on five shots but still saw her record drop to 0-5-1.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- The win for MCLA marked the team's first MASCAC win in nearly five years. The last conference victory for the Trailblazers came in the 2019 season finale against Framingham State when MCLA wrapped the year with a 1-0 win at home.
- The win also marks the first time the Trailblazers had won back-to-back games since 2018 when they defeated Mass. Maritime 2-0 at home on September 28th and defeated SUNY Cobleskill on the road on October 3rd.
UP NEXT:
On Friday, MCLA will be back in action when they play host to Westfield State for a MASCAC matchup with the Owls at Shewcraft Field. The teams will take the pitch for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
