Volleyball tops Mass. Maritime 3-0, grabs first MASCAC victory
North Adams, MA- The MCLA Volleyball team took on the Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon in the James T. Amsler Campus Center. The Trailblazers earned a decisive 3-0 victory over the Buccaneers to grab their first MASCAC win of the season.
MCLA improves its mark to 9-12 overall and 1-2 in conference play. MMA falls to 3-20 overall and is still in search of a conference win at 0-4.
With MCLA leading just 12-10 in the opening set, the Trailblazers used a scoring burst to pull away from MMA eventually earning a 25-14 set win. The hosts cruised in the second set winning 25-12 before Maritime put up a fight in the third set.
The Bucs led 9-5 early on before MCLA would use a 15-4 spurt to push out to a 20-13 lead and seem in control. MMA would rally, cutting the margin to 22-18 before MCLA netted the final three points to secure the win.
MMA was led by Deb Langley with 4 kills and 4 assists. Stephanie O'Connor added 11 digs in a losing effort.
MCLA was paced by Rachel Mills' five kills. The freshman also recorded 7 digs. Julia Christian added five kills and four digs as well. Courtney Parent notched 19 assists and 8 digs on the night.
The Trailblazers are off until Saturday when they travel to Salem State for a Tri Match with Endicott.
