Volleyball set to travel to Bridgewater State on Wednesday for MASCAC Quarterfinals

WESTFIELD, Mass. – The Framingham State Rams have claimed the top spot in the 2014 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament which begins with the quarterfinals on Wednesday, November 5.

Starting off the quarterfinal round is fourth-seeded Bridgewater State hosting fifth-seeded MCLA at 6 pm. The second quarterfinal match-up is between the third-seeded Westfield State Owls play host to the sixth-seeded Salem State Vikings at 7 pm.

MCLA and Bridgewater State played just a few days ago with the Bears earning a 3-0 victory to cap off the regular season.  

The winner of Bridgewater State/MCLA will play top-seeded Framingham State on Saturday, November 8 at 11 am while the winner of Westfield State/Salem State faces off with second-seeded Worcester State at 1 pm on the campus of Framingham State. The winner of the semifinals will face off for the MASCAC title on that Saturday afternoon following the second semifinal contest.

The Rams took home the top seed after a perfect 6-0 conference record to close out the regular season. Reigning MASCAC Rookie of the Year Alycia Rackliffe led the team with 340 kills, 44 blocks and .297 hitting.  Julia Wan was next on the team with 254 kills and a .238 hitting percentage.

Landing the second seed was Worcester who finished the season 5-1 in league play. Alyssa Jasper led the Lancers with a conference-best 443 kills and 4.39 kills per set average. Amanda Lewis closed out the season with 856 assists while adding 225 digs.

Westfield State is the third seed in the tournament after a 4-2 season. Freshman Victoria Sutphen was dominant in her first year with the Owls tallying 218 kills and 127 digs. Courtney Ryan was also stellar in her first season with 434 assists and 155 digs.

Bridgewater State earned the fourth seed after netting third MASCAC wins this season. The duo of Hannah Maymon and Clara Goncalves were solid for the Bears with 334 and 302 kills, respectively.

Rounding out the tournament field is MCLA and Salem State in fifth and sixth, respectively. MCLA closed out the season with two conference wins. Alexandra Chang is currently third in the conference in digs (380) and digs per set. The Vikings tallied a conference win on their way to earning the sixth seed. Micaela Forcaciari netted 325 assists on the year while Emily Peay led the team with 247 kills and .281 hitting percentage.

Last season Westfield State claimed the 2013 MASCAC Volleyball Championship crown with a 3-0 title game win over Framingham State.
